We’ve all heard of the recent tragic cases of deaths caused by people eating the wrong food and of course everyone wants to do more to prevent this happening in the future. Natasha Ednan-Laperouse’s passing in 2016, following consumption of a take-away sandwich lead to Natasha’s law. This came into effect in 2021 covering Pre-Packaged food for Direct Sale (PPDS). Owen Carey passed away in 2017 following the consumption of a chicken burger which had been glazed in buttermilk. This has now lead to the Food Standards Agency deciding *in December 2023 that they will introduce legislation to compel all (non PPDS) food businesses in the UK to provide written allergen information to their consumers. Let’s hope James Atkinsons death in 2020 from eating a pizza containing peanuts will lead to further reforms for delivery organisations.
How will you comply with Owen’s law?
